Intended Audience
Since its development in 1938, electroconvulsive therapy has remained a crucial part of the psychiatrist’s armamentarium in the treatment of major mental illness. Continued research has resulted in numerous refinements in treatment technique. Recommendations in the last decade regarding optimal practice have included important new ideas regarding patient selection, stimulus dose titration, and outpatient maintenance strategies. The International Society for ECT and Neurostimulation (ISEN), in accordance with its mission to promote the safe and effective use of ECT, commissioned a task force in 1997 to study the training and credentialing of clinicians in this treatment modality. As a result of this task force, this course on ECT concluding with an exam, was developed. This course has been developed for psychiatrists, other physicians, and nurses involved in the administration of ECT.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to
- Identify the indications for electroconvulsive therapy and appropriateness of patients,
- Evaluate patients to determine appropriateness for unilateral or bilateral treatment,
- Understand stimulus settings for present ECT devices,
- Identify and manage common ECT complications,
- Develop effective continuation and maintenance treatment strategies for patients with recurrent illness.
Online Event Format
This online event will be hosted live via Zoom Video Webinar. Registrants will have access to program information, including slide sets received from speakers in advance of the meeting, via a Google Drive file. This event will not be recorded. Registrants should plan to participate at the times noted on the event agenda.

Claiming Credit After the Event
ISEN requests that all attendees complete the event evaluation. Upon completion of the evaluation, you may download and save/print a certificate indicating either the number of continuing education credits earned or proof of attendance. The deadline to claim continuing education credit is December 23, 2026. The link to claim your CME credit for this event will be distributed during the course along with instructions on how to claim CME.
Refund Policy
A refund of the registration fee, less an $85 processing fee, will be made when an email-written request followed by an email-written confirmation is received prior to October 15th, 2026. Fees will not be refunded for failure to participate. The sponsors of the course reserve the right to cancel or postpone any event because of unforeseen circumstances or insufficient enrollment. In the event of such cancellations, full tuition will be refunded. ISEN reserves the right to refuse registration, or refund registration fees, to any person whose presence has the potential to be disruptive and/or not consistent with the mission and goals of the organization.
