Intended Audience
Since its development in 1938, electroconvulsive therapy has remained a crucial part of the psychiatrist’s armamentarium in the treatment of major mental illness. Continued research has resulted in numerous refinements in treatment technique. Recent recommendations have refined best practices in key areas such as patient selection, individualized stimulus dosing, and maintenance treatment strategies—all of which rely heavily on the expertise and collaboration of skilled ECT nurses. The International Society for ECT and Neurostimulation (ISEN), in accordance with its mission to promote the safe and effective use of ECT, commissioned a task force in 1997 to study the training and credentialing of clinicians in this treatment modality. The result of that initiative is this comprehensive ECT course and examination, designed to support ECT nurses, whose clinical knowledge and precision are essential to the delivery of safe and effective treatment.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to
- Identify the indications for electroconvulsive therapy and appropriateness of patients
- Understand the care for patients prior to, during, and after ECT treatment
- Evaluate emergency situations and how to manage them
- Understand PACU issues and how to monitor and manage them
- Develop effective follow up/case management procedures
